Mad Hatter Day!

Today is Mad Hatter Day! So let us celebrate the character we have all come to know and love. So act crazy and have a Mad Hatter tea party if you would like. Or make a hat. Or just wear a crazy hat!


And just a little tidbit of trivia: The term mad hatter doesn't have a definite origin. It is thought to refer to the fact that hatters used to use mercury in the making of felt used in hats which led to nervous system problems causing hatters to tremble and appear insane. Thus mercury poisoning was also called 'Mad Hatter's Disease'.

A pie post for National Pi Day!

So instead of a cake for his birthday, my brother requested that I make pecan pies. Works for me, I like pie. However I pigged out at his party and didn't eat any of the pie that we cut there, but never fear, I made two pecan pies and the second one wasn't even touched. And I even made the pie crust! However a week later and I still haven't tried it, though I have it on good authority that the pie was good.

Yeah, I just had some and it was good.

A day for the polar bears. In honor of the white furry critters enjoy some polar bear information!

- Polar bears normally have two cubs per litter. There have been cases of singles and triples.
- Polar bears have black skin
- Males can weight anywhere from 775-1200 pounds while females can weight anywhere from 330-650 pounds
- They look the whitest in the sun after molting period which occurs from spring to late summer, the yellow of their fur can occur due to the oils from the seals they eat
- According to research by Alison Ames, polar bears are just as smart as apes
- Grolar/pizzly bears are a hybrid of a polar bear and a grizzly bear that have occurred in both captivity and in the wild. The occurrence of them in the wild is leading to concerns of global warming due to grizzly bears moving further north into polar bear territory.

Random Acts of Kindness Day

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day! So if you feel so inclined do something kind for someone else, not only will they feel good, but so will you. It doesn't have to be something huge either something as small as writing a hand written thank you note and mailing it to a friend is wonderful! Here are just a few ideas to help you along if you need them:

- Hand write a thank you note to someone
- Hold the door open for someone
- Let your family members know how much you appreciate them with a phone call
- Call a friend and just chat for a while, or better yet if possible go get coffee with them and catch up
- Sincerely compliment a stranger about something (hair, clothes, whatever)
- Visit a nursing home and talk with someone who doesn't often receive visitors
- Take donations to a homeless shelter
- Smile at others while you are walking down the street and say 'hello' when you make eye contact
- Add some money to a parking meter if you notice one that is low
- Call a local animal shelter and see what they need, go buy it and drop it off

Really, even just a smile can make someone's day better. I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Winnie the Pooh Day

Yes, you did read that right. Today is Winnie the Pooh Day! The day were we celebrate the birthday of A.A. Milne and his wonderful cast of furry (and feathered) friends from The Hundred Acre Woods. Enjoy the day by eating honey on toast, playing Pooh Sticks, going on a walk in your own neck of the woods (or you know, lack there of if you live in the city), watch one of the movies or episodes, or read one of the books.

Odd Holidays

Through out the year, well, rather just about everyday there is some odd holiday such as World Penguin Day, Emma M Nutt Day (first woman telephone operator), Middle Child's Day and many, many more. Some days even have multiple holidays. January 4th is Trivia Day, so in honor of it here is some odd/useless trivia:

• Donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes.
• The average life span of a major league baseball is seven pitches.
• Everyone has a unique tongue print.
• Bruce Lee's movements were so fast in movies that they actually had to slow the slim speed down so the movements could be seen.
• The mask used by Michael Meyers in the original Halloween movie was actually a Captain Kirk mask painted white.
• The glue on Israeli postage stamps is certified kosher.
• The liquid inside of young coconuts can be used as a substitute for blood plasma.
• A dime has 118 ridges around its edge.
• A polar bear's fur is not white, it is clear.
• A few signatures of William Shakespeare's survive however none of the spellings are 'William Shakespeare'.
• The horse of many colors in "The Wizard of OZ" was colored with JELL-O crystals. The scenes had to be shot quickly because the horse would lick the crystals off.
